Tackling trends

This time every year people are bombarded with the latest must-have wall colour, furniture style and even tap colour. And even though that can be annoying and unnecessary, it is satisfying to change things around in your home to make it feel fresh.

For those who have a resistance to buying new stuff for the sake of it but want to update their home a little, or those interested in taking on new trends on a limited budget, here are some tips on incorporating them into your home without breaking the bank.

The starting point should be things you actually like, rather than things that are popular. 2019 is a pretty loud year interior wise - the 80s/90s revival is alive and kicking, and the mid century modern trend from 2018 is sticking around too and the Memphis style is getting more popular by the day. At the same time, minimalism is popular, so there are lot of different options for updating your style.

The 80s and 90s were all about surprising colour combinations, velvet, and circular everything. It’s lots of fun - but it’s obviously a trend to tread cautiously with.

Don’t splurge on big ticket items just because they’re the flavour of the month. The velvet sofa is everywhere this year, but sofas are something people don’t tend to replace regularly. If you’re generally a ‘greige’ sofa kind of person but have fallen in love with an S-shaped, pink velvet sofa, it’s probably not a good idea to buy it.

You can easily make changes to hint at trends like maximalism your home without committing to a full redecoration.

If you can’t see yourself loving something in five or ten years, and it’s pricey - go out and search for something more moderate. Buy a bunch of cushions or a throw that suits the look you are into right now, but stick with the sofa that will see you through.

Beds, tables and other big pieces of furniture all fall into this category - buy something you know you will like for a long time, and decorate with whatever you’re currently into. Buy a simple bed and decorate as you like with bedding, or a table you’re happy with and go for it with tablecloths, plants and whatever else that’s irresistibly trendy.

The easiest most affordable way to incorporate trends into your home is by changing the smaller things.

If you want to update your living room, for example, look to the bigger but less pricey options: add a new rug, buy a large new framed poster or print, or find a new decorative item or coffee table centrepiece. In bedrooms, new bedding is relatively low cost but can have a big impact, and new side tables can also make a difference for all living spaces. A new mirror or shower curtain for a bathroom can do the trick.

And don’t forget that subtracting things from your house can sometimes give you the effect you want; Marie Kondo has brought minimalism to the masses and you don’t have to buy a single thing.

One trend truly worth following - regardless of home style - is the current emphasis on mindful consumption; thinking about the sustainability of what you buy, the durability, and increased importance placed on supporting local craftspeople where possible.
