A Wanaka-based company swapped tools for tongs last Wednesday (March 17), cooking more than 100 meals for anonymous recipients.

Staff from construction firm CDL Building took a day out of their usual schedule to cook up the meals for not-for-profit Food For Love, which makes and distributes meals for people in need.

Co-ordinated by Bex Sarginson, Food for Love first began back in 2016 as a small gesture of support for those in need of a little extra help - but it has quickly become a key part of the community.

CDL managing director Justin Carnie said teaming up with Food for Love was a no-brainer.

“Choosing to partner with such a worthy charity didn’t require a second thought,” he said. “It was particularly humbling to learn that these volunteers provide upwards of 40 meals per week for local families and individuals who are going through a tough time.”

The cook-up took place at the rugby clubroom’s new kitchen and, as a result of the effort, there are meals ready to go for anyone in need.

“We have meals-a-plenty and want to reach out to you, the community to see if you know anyone going through tough times who could benefit from a nutritious meal,” Food for Love said in a statement.

“The days are getting shorter and the nights are colder so please check on your neighbours and if you know of nominees that could benefit.”

Another member of the CDL team, Hayley Barbour, said giving back was especially important in the post Covid-19 environment when “there are some valued members of our community doing it tough.”

Recipients of Food for Love meals do not need to meet any specific criteria to receive a meal: A nominee can complete a form with recipients’ address, dietary requirements and a few other details on the charity’s website.

Food for Love is also always on the lookout for volunteers who can cook or deliver food too; visit the website or Facebook page for more information.
