Wānaka Business Chamber general manager Glenn Peat says it’s more important than ever for locals to support local businesses.

At least three businesses have either closed or announced their closure in the past few weeks.

“We’re aware of some closures, including Soul Clothing, Revology, and Wānaka Interiors (retail store), but closures vary across businesses for different reasons, so it's hard to generalise,” Glenn said.

“It’s difficult to say if this is a trend or an anomaly, as multiple factors like external economic pressures and consumer behaviour are at play.”

Glenn said Wānaka’s retail sector, like many others across the country, has faced challenges due to changing economic conditions.

Some retail businesses are adapting to the conditions and there is still “resilience” in the sector.

“Several businesses [are] adapting through strategies like expanding their online presence, collaborating with other local businesses, and offering exclusive local products to attract both locals and visitors.”

“We do empathise with the challenges retail businesses face, both here in Wānaka and across the country, and encourage everyone to support local where possible,” he said.

“It’s now more important than ever for our community to support local businesses to help keep our town vibrant.”
