Support given to locals isolating with Covid-19 Community Networks/LINK has been delivering groceries to people with Covid-19 as well as supporting them in a range of other ways.

Community Networks/LINK continue to support people who are self isolating with Covid-19 in the Upper Clutha.

LINK manager Kathy Dedo said the organisation receives roughly five to 10 requests for Covid-19 related assistance each week.

“For those who need assistance, we have been providing food parcels, delivery of these and other essential items, and one-off financial assistance for costs associated with the need to self isolate,” Kathy said.

“For some, self-isolation meant losing wages which makes it hard to make ends meet. People can reach out via their medical practice, the Ministry of Social Development, or directly to request support.”

This work is supported by the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) (with which Community/Networks have a long-running relationship), providing a gateway to free information and support from government agencies like Work and Income New Zealand (WINZ), the Inland Revenue Department (IRD), and immigration, financial advisors, legal aid, and social work services.

“More recently, we were awarded a Community Connector contract and food grants, which enabled us to hire a social worker to support individuals and whānau; as well as strengthen our community development work,” Kathy said.

In December 2021, as Omicron approached, the focus of the Community Connector work turned to supporting those who are self-isolating.

“In addition to the specific Covid-related challenges, we continue to see people who are struggling financially due to rising cost of living, having increased anxiety and stress, and seeking family support,” Community Networks/LINK social worker Heather Clay said.

“We can connect them to a variety of local resources who can help. Anyone is welcome to contact us anytime to discuss their situation – this social work service is free and confidential.”

Community Networks/LINK is a community support and connection centre.
