Supermarket shortages due to floodingSome products are in short supply on supermarket shelves in the lower South Island thanks to the key delivery route of SH1 being cut after flooding.

Wanaka is starting to feel the impact of the key delivery route of State Highway 1 being cut as a result of flood damage in Canterbury.

Shoppers noticed a shortage in some items on supermarket shelves today (Tuesday June 1).

New World Three Parks owner Natashia Bartley told the Wanaka App that bread, milk and a few items such as bananas and chicken were in low supply.

“Our Monday delivery is expected to arrive in store tonight at 8.30pm, and hopefully tomorrow stock levels should be getting back to normal,” she said.

Natashia said she wasn’t aware of people buying more products than normal to stockpile.

“Over the next few days, deliveries to many stores south of Christchurch are likely to be disrupted due to road closures,” Foodstuffs New Zealand head of corporate affairs Antoinette Laird said.

“Our teams are all pulling together and working hard behind the scenes to minimise the impact on our customers due to the floods.”

Foodstuffs supplies New World supermarkets and Four Square stores.

“Where necessary, our logistics teams are finding alternative transport routes for our drivers, however, these do sometimes require significant diversions and will take the delivery trucks longer to get to their destination,” Antoinette said.
