A small group of Te Kura o Tititea Mt Aspiring College (MAC) students braved miserable weather yesterday (Friday May 26) to march in support of climate justice.
The group gathered on Lismore Park at 1pm before marching into the centre of Wānaka, chanting: “When you say climate I say justice”.
The group was part of a national movement, School Strike 4 Climate NZ.
One of MAC’s head students, Jackson Duguid, who was part of the Wānaka march yesterday, told the Wānaka App the group took part along with many other schools around the country, in the hope of “forcing accountability and action from our representatives in government”.
“Today's strike focused on the national School Strike 4 Climate NZ demands, including drastic cuts in emissions, more government accountability, and a lowered voting age,” he said.
“Overall we are looking to show our politicians that young people today are determined to push for a brighter future, as well as demanding that we push for that future faster than we have been.”
A parent of one of the students told the Wānaka App the students have “tacit school support, though technically are being marked as unjustified absent”.
