Slow holidays for retailersWānaka Business Chamber general manager Glenn Peat

The past two weeks of school holidays have presented “a mixed experience” for local retailers, Wānaka Business Chamber general manager Glenn Peat says.

He estimated that trading could be down as much as 30 to 40 percent compared to the 2023 July school holidays.

“While some businesses, particularly certain cafes and shops, have seen consistent foot traffic and sales, others have experienced quieter periods,” Glenn told the Wānaka App.

He said the variability could be attributed to several factors, including fluctuating weather conditions affecting ski field operations and visitor patterns, as well as broader economic considerations affecting consumer spending habits.

“In discussions with business owners we have received comments from some local businesses indicating that trading could be down as much as 30-40 percent compared to the July school holidays last year,” Glenn said.
