Six on the Dot is the debut exhibition of local artist Max de Roy and it will showcase six of his new artworks over a period of a week in the centre of Wanaka.
The exhibition is a debut for the artist (formerly known as Max Hall) and his contemporary artworks will feature an amalgamation of two of his favourite elements of art history: pop art, in the form of Ben Day’s dot printing process, and classical art.
The subject of each of the six artworks varies from still life to domestic abuse, Max said, and the style is deliberately provocative, asking the viewer to look up close where its form is “clouded and maddening” and to stand back to see the total in its simplicity.
“That’s what the dots do so beautifully; it forces interpretation on the viewer,” he said.
At the transformed office venue of Universal Developments (123 Ardmore Street, near Kai Whakapai), the exhibition will open with a gala event at 6:00pm on the dot next Tuesday (February 2) and will remain open to the public from February 3-9 starting at 10:00am each day.
