Sister act: Wattersons take out alpine ski racing titles Mathilda Watterson is a member of the Snow Sports NZ Junior FIS squad.

Wānaka alpine ski racing sisters Mathilda (16) and Izzy (15) Watterson have won the overall New Zealand titles in the U21 and U16 age categories.

Mathilda is a member of the Snow Sports New Zealand (SSNZ) junior FIS squad and will be heading to the northern hemisphere later this year to represent New Zealand on the FIS racing circuit, while Izzy is part of the New Zealand youth squad.

Mathilda competed in the National Championships at Coronet Peak this winter where she claimed the Overall NZ U21 title.

During the ANC Winter Games, she became the only Kiwi to make ANC points in both Slalom and Giant Slalom.

"I am really happy with my achievements this winter and I feel I have momentum going forward to Europe,” Mathilda said.

“I am starting to see the rewards for the work I am doing off the snow and this encourages me to keep going".

Izzy Watterson was determined to take the overall U16 title this year.

Izzy won all three U16 National points Slalom races at the Remarkables this winter.

At the national championships at Cardrona Alpine Resort, Izzy won the Slalom title nearly five seconds before the second place getter.

"I have given away the overall title the last two years by straddling the gate in Slalom,” Izzy said.

“In my last year in youth racing I was determined to take home the overall win this time.”

The sisters thanked the Wānaka Snowsports Club, Upper Clutha Sports Trust, Sargood Bequest and Skeggs Foundation for their support.
