SUCfree Wānaka has launched a social media campaign to help visitors to Wānaka travel more sustainably.
The campaign, #SUCfreeholidays, hopes to educate visitors and encourage them to think about the impact they are having while travelling, and how a simple change in habit can make a big difference.
“It’s been three years since the launch of SUCfree Wānaka,” SUCfree Wānaka digital marketing and administration person Daisy Watford said.
“Within that time, an outstanding 72 percent of Wānaka residents have given up take-away cups. There are currently 12 SUCfree cafes in Wānaka, saving around 180,000 cups from landfill each year.”
Daisy said it is now time to get the visitors on board.
The campaign encourages visitors to take a picture of themselves having a coffee at a local cafe or exploring the town with a reusable cup, share it on Instagram, and follow and tag @sucfreewanaka.
Each week two people will be chosen to win a prize each, with RealNZ, The Lavender Farm, Bike Glendhu, Puzzling World and Federal Diner all offering prizes.
While the focus is on visitors, the campaign is also open to local residents.
“We want the locals to show-off their hard work too,” Daisy said.
“It’s not often you find a town where so many people are dedicated to the cause. If you’ve made a pledge to ditch disposable cups then we want you to shout about it.”
#SUCfreeholidays will run from Wednesday February 15 until Wednesday March 8.
