In the second match of their season, the Wanaka AFC Senior team took on Wakatipu United at the Queenstown Events Centre last Saturday (June 20), going down 5-1.

The game, played on the main oval pitch, didn’t start well for the Wanaka team with Wakatipu opening the scoring within six minutes.

The Seniors took the goal on the chin and came back with a goal of their own 20 minutes later by left wing Jacob Lange, tying the score at 1-1.

Just before halftime though, Wakatipu struck back with a second goal to go into the halftime break with a 2-1 lead.

The second half started the same way as the first with some very good play resulting in Wakatipu slotting another goal within six minutes of the second half.

Playing strongly, Wakaitpu dominated the second half, scoring another two goals before the final whistle.

Wakatipu deserved the win on the day but the final score didn’t reflect the effort the Seniors put in. The team had its chances and at times strung some good plays together but was guilty of being too complacent and letting Wakatipu dictate the game.

Senior centre back Liam Hodges had another fine game, backing up his performance from last week.

With only two games played in the new revamped Central Otago competition there are plenty of games to play and the WAFC Senior team knows that the season isn’t over by any means. They still have time to turn things around by putting in the hard work at training.

This Saturday (June 27) the WAFC Senior team has a home game against Cromwell at 2:45pm at the Wanaka Recreation Centre.
