SAR teams ease into summerWānaka SAR chair Raewyn Calhaem

Search and rescue (SAR) teams have eased into summer with few call-outs so far, Wānaka SAR chair Raewyn Calhaem says.

Raewyn told the Wānaka App that Fantail Falls on the Haast River continues to be a “hotspot” for rescues.

Multiple rescues were undertaken last year around Fantail Falls and the track to Mt Brewster, with heightened interest sparked by social media posts from visitors, police and rescuers have said.

“In December we sent a swiftwater team to rescue a group of trampers who were stuck on the Brewster side of the Haast River at Fantail Falls,” Raewyn said.

“This continues to be a bit of a hotspot for rescues as the river can rise rapidly following a period of rain.”

Raewyn reminded people to always check the forecast, including days on both sides of the planned trip, and be aware of the ‘commitment trap’.

“Set decision points for your trip before you leave, don't be afraid to save your adventure for another time and have a plan B,” she said.

She also reminded people travelling in the backcountry to carry appropriate gear for all weather conditions especially this summer which has been so changeable.

If you are unsure of what to expect on your trip or what gear is required then check out the Mountain Safety Council's track reviews and suggested gear lists on Plan My Walk.
