Repair superheroes needed for upcoming eventsThe Repair Revolution will return to Wānaka on April 30 and Luggate on May 13. Ruth Blunt brought her darning skills to a previous event, saving several items from landfill as a result.

Volunteers with a fix-it ‘superpower’ and can-do attitude are being called on for the next round of Repair Revolution events in the Upper Clutha.

The Repair Revolution will return to Wānaka on April 30 and Luggate on May 13, giving people a chance to have their broken items fixed or to receive advice on how they could be repaired.

Wastebusters Repair Revolution project manager Sophie Ward said volunteers were now being called on to help on the day, including those who have assisted before and those who have wanted to but couldn’t due to other commitments.

“We always welcome a wide range of people on board to ensure as many items of varying materials can be saved from landfill,” Sophie said.

“Last year we had someone darning socks, electricians fixing small appliances and carpentry experts restoring toys, among much more.”

“Whatever your repair superpower is, we’d love to have you join us.”

Volunteers who shared their time and skills were crucial to the success of previous repair events, she said.

The repair concept has gained momentum over the years and the popularity of local events continues to grow.

“We’re delighted to be bringing the event back and encourage people to dig out items that need fixing or repairing,” Sophie said. “We think it's a great way to get the community together and give older items a new lease of life.”

The Wānaka Repair Revolution event will be held at the Wānaka Community Workshop and the Luggate event will take place at the Luggate Memorial Hall, both from 11am to 3pm.

If people know that specific parts are required for their repair they should also bring these along.

Wastebusters will bring their Repair Revolution tool trailer full of equipment to the event for repairers to use.

The Repair Revolution events, which are funded by the QLDC Zero Waste District Programme, aim to reduce waste and offer an alternative to ‘throwaway culture’, share repair knowledge and build community connections.

“We live in a society that revolves around consumption but we aim to empower people to renew, revive and repair their things to keep them out of landfill,” Sophie said.

“We look forward to our communities joining us again at this year’s Repair Revolution events.”
