There are plans for benches around Eely Point to be rejuvenated, with one special bench to be restored in memory of a young Wānaka man who died earlier this year.
The Wānaka Upper Clutha Community Board has approved a request for a memorial seat and plaque for Samuel Robert John Dickson, who attended Wānaka Primary School and Te Kura o Tititea Mount Aspiring College.
Samuel was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 17 and, following a period of remission, received a second cancer diagnosis in 2022. He died on May 25, 2023 at the age of 24.
“The majority of Sammy’s life was based in Wānaka and we would love to honour his life where his happiest memories are,” his family said in their application.
The bench they have identified is in Eely Point Recreation Reserve, with a clear view up the lake.
A Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) report said the bench needs some moderate improvements, which will be paid for - as would the memorial plaque - by Samuel’s family.
The plaque will read: “In Loving Memory of Samuel Robert John Dickson 1999 – 2023 ‘Family Forever’.”
A bench without a view.
Cody, who knew the family, said it was a comfort to know the community “can provide a space to remember and celebrate Sam’s life”.
At the board’s meeting earlier this month (September 7), chair Simon Telfer noted that council staff were also planning to upgrade other benches in Eely Point Reserve where foliage growth had obscured “what was once a view”.
Two such benches have been identified near the boat ramp.
“That’s going to really rejuvenate that area,” Simon said, noting that foliage would be removed from around one bench, and a view shaft would be created for the other.
