Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has advised the Luggate Red Bridge will be closed for three weeks from next Monday (May 15) on weekdays between 9am and 5pm.

Abseilers working for Aspiring Highways will be working on the bridge, tightening bolts and checking deck running boards.

Waka Kotahi Central Otago maintenance contract manager Peter Standring said people who wish to use the bridge during closure times will need to detour via Hāwea Flat.

“We thank the travelling public and freight operators for their patience and understanding,” Peter said.

In a statement Waka Kotahi advised that arrangements have been made to accommodate school buses and emergency vehicles.

Last year (2022) Waka Kotahi told the Wānaka App that the 109-year-old bridge is safe despite it not being designed and constructed for the level of heavy vehicles that use it.

Waka Kotahi has an annual inspection programme in place for the bridge and a critical components inspection is carried out every six years or earlier if required. 

The Red Bridge provides a vital link to Wānaka as it is the only high-productivity motor vehicle (HPMV) route across the upper Clutha River.
