Rams score comfortable win over lowly ranked CavaliersRams fullback Henry Schikker heads for the try line after a 50m solo run.

The Upper Clutha premier rugby team (The Rams) scored a comfortable 46-7 win over the Cromwell Cavaliers in Cromwell yesterday (Saturday 18 July).

The Rams ran in eight tries, six in the second half, and were seldom troubled by the Cavaliers who are yet to register a win this season in the Central Otago Premier Rugby Competition.

The Rams started the match with a try after just five minutes but some wayward kicking and lack of discipline saw them struggle to take control of the match in the first spell going to the break 12-0 ahead.

The second half was a much more dominant performance as the Rams lifted the tempo of the match and maintained ball possession. A try immediately into the half, to outstanding mid field back Oliver Stirling, set the tone and the Rams capitalized on their superior ball movement to score at almost a point a minute.

“At times we showed some shape and there were some nice tries scored, but our discipline let us down, especially in that first half,” said Rams head coach Paul Glynn after the match.

Centre/Wing Tyler Ford has impressed this season.

As the Rams head into the final matches of the round robin Paul will be concerned about his sides ability to build phases and control possession for longer periods of time.

“If we play like this against Arrowtown (this week's match) we’ll be on the wrong end of it. We’ll be working hard this week to get the boys in the right head frame for that one,” said Paul.

For the Rams Oliver Stirling had another strong performance and fullback Henry Schikker looked dangerous scoring the try of the match, a 50m gliding run. Young lock and player of the day Josh O’Regan impressed with his mobility and lineout play.

The Rams next match is against defending champions Arrowtown in Arrowtown on Saturday, kick off 2.30pm.
