A man has been arrested after fleeing police this afternoon.

Police said they were alerted to dangerous driving on Wānaka-Mt Aspiring Road at approximately 3.40pm today (Tuesday, November 19).

The driver stopped for police on West Wānaka Road, a police spokesperson said.

The driver has been taken into custody and charges are being considered, they said.

Members of the public were alerted by numerous sirens.

One witness said they saw a vehicle traveling at speed at 4pm near Wānaka Station Park and passing vehicles on the inside by driving on the grass verge. 

The car was followed by three police cars, they said.
