Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) says “good progress” is being made on the new roundabout for the State Highway 6 and State Highway 84 intersection.

“While not fully completed the roundabout should be ready to use over the busy Christmas-New Year holidays,” NZTA said in an update.  

When finished, it will feature a 40 metre-diameter, single-lane, five-leg roundabout.

“The expected full project completion date is April 2024.”

NZTA said traffic layout and management around the construction site has changed as construction progresses.

NZTA hired Fulton Hogan to complete the $5M roundabout project, which began in February.

The intersection where the roundabout is being constructed was the site of dozens of vehicle accidents since 2010 and members of the community had advocated for a roundabout to improve safety.

“Thank you for your patience and following the directions of work site crews,” NZTA said.

“This will go a long way to achieving what everyone wants, and that is getting this job completed quickly and efficiently and keeping project crews, road users, and nearby residents safe.”
