New event promises air sports ‘magic’Vicki Zadrozny and Dan Pugsley are excited to bring the ‘Magic Land - Adventure Sports Festival’ to Wānaka for the first time.

An entrepreneurial couple with a passion for air sports are behind a new festival coming to Wānaka next March.

Tickets go on sale today for the ‘Magic Land - Adventure Sports Festival’, the dreamchild of Dan Pugsley and his wife Vicki Zadrozny.

While the festival will include biking, watersports and other land-based adventure sports, its main focus is air sports.

“It’s inspired by our travels in Europe,” Dan told the Wānaka App, pointing to Veko-Extreme Sports Week in Norway and the Buttermere Bash - Paragliding and Air Sports Festival in the UK as highlights that have influenced Magic Land.

Magic Land will feature base jumping, wing suiting, paragliding and skydiving, and it will also be the host to the grand final of aerobatic flying competition Acrofest.

Dan said Wānaka was a fitting location for the festival with the broad range of outdoor enthusiasts who live here.

He and Vicki call Hāwea home and before moving here lived in Queenstown for 10 years, working in a range of adventure tourism roles, from AJ Hackett to rafting.

“We met at AJ Hackett,” he said.

Magic Land will run for a week from March 18, but the keystone events will take place between March 22 and 24.

Dan said he had co-ordinated with Ripe Festival (which also takes place at Glendhu Bay on March 23) and said he sees the two events as complementary.

"They'll get an airshow and a day on the booze," he said.

More details about the festival are yet to be announced, but live music, DJs and more events are promised.

Dan and Vicki hope to make Magic Land an annual event.
