New bike trails openKirimoko Trails will open on December 4.

Bike Wānaka will celebrate the opening of a new biking area for the community this coming weekend.

The Kirimoko Trails, located above the Kirimoko development in Wānaka, feature four trails for a range of ages and abilities.

Ground was broken on the project last year and a Bike Wānaka representative said the organisation looked forward to welcoming the community to the new trails on Saturday December 4 for the “grand opening”.

“A lot of time, effort and generosity has gone into making this happen and it's all been for the  community, by the community,” Bike Wānaka said in a statement.

“We will be opening the trails officially with giant party trains of riders, so come join the fun.”

The four new trails are designed to cater to a range of ages and abilities.

Kirimoko Trail’s four trails include the ‘Up Trail’, a climbing trail with a gentle gradient; the ‘Family Trail’; a wide trail for all abilities; the ‘Flow Line’, designed for more experienced bikers with bigger berms, rollers, drops and gap jumps; and the ‘Jump Line’, which is another step up from the Flow Line with gap jumps.

Led by Bike Wānaka, the new bike trails have been supported by Southern Ventures, who allowed the trust to be built on their land and contributed to the cost of the project.

The Otago Community Trust, M Sidey, D&K Good and Design Windows also contributed financially and the community-driven ‘sponsor a trail’ initiative has also supported it.

Because the final costs of the project still need to be covered individuals can still contribute to ‘sponsor a  trail’ (where every $15 donated sponsors one metre of trail) here.

The Kirimoko Trails grand opening will take place on Saturday from 10am to 12pm.
