Netball: Students show class in close lossMeg Breen (MANC A WD) and Neil Stuart (WA) contest a ball.

The Wanaka men’s netball team continued their unbeaten run against A Grade sides with a close 44-41 win over Mount Aspiring Netball Club A (MANC A) on Friday night (July 17) at the Wanaka Recreation Centre.

In a match which saw a number of MAC teachers taking on their students, it was the students giving a netballing lesson in the first quarters leading 24-16 at the half time break.

MANC A’s strong start against their taller and more physical opponents had all their skills on display with their shooters having a good first spell against a strong men’s defence. In mid court MANC A showed speed and the defensive end worked tirelessly against their much taller opponents.

MANC’s effort began to tell in the third quarter as Wanaka men lifted in defence and attack to close the gap to just one.

Wanaka men pulled away in the final quarter to secure the win but this match will be remembered for the tenacity and energy MANC A brought to the contest.

In the other A grade games, Dunstan had a strong and convincing 55-35 win against Pioneer A and Cromwell lost to Molyneux 32-41.
