A pop-up fundraiser taking place this weekend will support the upcoming YAMI (Youth + Adults in the Music Industry) music summit and provide locals with the chance to get their hands on some great second-hand goodies.

Lake Wānaka SouNZ and Mount Aspiring College’s (MAC) music department have teamed up to deliver the ‘Music + Flea Market’ fundraiser.

Taking place at 131 Plantation Road (the old MAC music room) from 10am-2pm on Saturday (January 14) there will be everything from amps to pianos - starting for as little as five dollars - and even a teepee available.

With the Tuki Festival on hiatus, sheds have been emptied and items have been added to surplus music and audio items from MAC that need new homes, YAMI director Lynne Christie said.

Over $12,000 has already been raised for YAMI thanks to four “incredible” YAMI interns from MAC, Lynne said.

“They’ve been fantastic,” she said, adding that Oscar, Otis, Clarke and Ella have given up their holiday time to design, clean, paint, and price items for the fundraiser.

Taking place during NZ Music Month in May, the two-day YAMI music summit gives students the chance to learn all about the New Zealand music industry by taking part in a range of workshops and performances alongside some of the country’s top musical talent.

Lynne told the Wānaka App YAMI 2023 is well over halfway sold, and looks on track for the two-day passes to be sold out by March. This year’s tutors will be made public at the end of the month, she said.

As well as the Saturday fundraiser, YAMI will also be supported by a silent auction of a one-off, hand-stencilled artwork by artist Sole.

The ‘Rippon 08’ poster has been signed by many artists who performed at the event, including members of Kora, Shapeshifter, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Connan Mockasin, TrinityRoots, Shihad, Anna Coddington, Hollie Smith, and Anika Moa.

The auction will begin at $200 and information on how to bid will be available on the YAMI and Tuki festival Facebook pages. The auction will close on January 23.
