Work on the new Mt Iron roundabout will stop today (Thursday December 20) for the Christmas and New Year period.

The roundabout at the SH6/SH84 intersection has been under construction since May.

“The roundabout will be operational over the holiday period,” Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency said.

“A lower 50 km/h speed limit will be in place over the holiday period.”

Standard roundabout road rules will apply.

The roundabout is on track to open by April 2024, Waka Kotahi said.

Construction will resume on January 16 and the speed limit will drop to 30km/h to keep people working on site safe.

“We will be working on the Luggate leg of the roundabout then build the Riverbank Road lanes,” Waka Kotahi said.

“While the last two roundabout legs are being constructed, vehicles will need to travel on temporary traffic lanes.”

Waka Kotahi said landscaping and drainage will also take place during this time.

“While driving through the new roundabout follow both the on-site signs and directions of work site crews,” Waka Kotahi said.

“This is one small thing you can do to help keep people working on site, other drivers, and nearby residents safe.”

Over the busy period, people on the road should still be prepared for delays, allow extra time, drive carefully, observe on-site signs, and follow any traffic management crew directions.
