Mt Aspiring rescues spark police warning over high riversMt Aspiring

Two incidents in Mt Aspiring National Park today (Friday February 3) have sparked a police warning for people who may be planning a tramp in the area.

Three people were rescued from Siberia Hut after activating a personal locator beacon when the Siberia Stream became too dangerous to cross.

The second rescue involved an individual who was unable to cross the Makarora River.

In a statement this afternoon police said the current water levels and the forecast for more rain in the area meant the rivers are likely to remain dangerous.

Trampers are asked to check river levels before setting out and to avoid rivers in the park if possible.

Wānaka Search and Rescue (SAR), the Rescue Coordination Centre, and local police were all involved in today’s rescues.
