Ruby Andrews (Queenstown, 17) has won the freeski slopestyle title at the FIS Park and Pipe Junior World Championships in Switzerland, rounding out a competition in which a number of Queenstown Lakes-based athletes have earned spots on the podium.
The young freeskier said she “could not be happier to take the win here at Leysin”.
It was Ruby’s first run, which scored her 85.40 and won her the event: She started with a technical back swap on the rainbow rail before lacing together a solid jump section and finishing off with a 270 onto the final rail.
Wānaka’s Luca Harrington (18) also competed in the freeski slopestyle finals, finishing in thirteenth place.
Harper Souness (Queenstown, 16) finished in fifth position in the freeski big air.
While the freeskiers were throwing down on the slopestyle course the snowboarders were getting to work on the big air jump.
Wānaka’s Dane Menzies (16) finished just off the podium in fourth place and Txema Mazet-Brown (Raglan, 15) finished in eighth place.
Late last week Wānaka athletes earned two silver medals: Luca secured a silver in the freeski big air event, Cam Melville Ives (15) also earned a silver.
