Mistakes cost Premiers in loss to MosgielWanaka’s Adam Hewson takes a free kick

The Wanaka Premier football side suffered a 2-4 defeat against Mosgiel in their Southern Premier League match played at the Wanaka Recreation Centre on Saturday (September 12).

Playing into a stiff breeze in the first half Wanaka struggled for consistency, conceding a goal early and gifting a second goal when an errant pass found Mosgiel striker Cam Anderson who earned a penalty which he converted in the 25th minute.

Wanaka settled late in the half and their short passing game was rewarded when Steve Pleskun scored with a left foot strike after a move starting from their own goal box encompassing seven passes. Wanaka then dominated play leading into half time but didn't take their opportunities as Everton Rossi, Pleskun, and Adam Hewson all had shots on goal that couldn't beat the Mosgiel keeper.

With half time approaching Mosgiel pounced on another Wanaka mistake to put the visitors 3-1 up at the break.

Wanaka started with more purpose and a favourable wind in the second half.

Barry Grehan, Michael Gealogo and Rossi started to control possession resulting in further shots at goal from Fletcher Cavanagh, Levi Fletcher and Pleskun. For Mosgiel, Anderson was proving the danger-man with his menacing pace and for the most part centre back pairing of Thomas Van Hees and Alan Carmichael coped with the youngster.

A Wanaka win was all but snuffed out when Mosgiel scored against the run of play from a well placed low free kick that snuck past Aarron Molloy in the Wanaka goal to make it 4-1.

Wanaka continued to attack and got their second goal when Levi Fletcher delivered a cross shot which was neatly steered into the Mosgiel goal by the lively Pleskun, to make it 4-2 in the eightieth minute.

Wanaka mounted attack after attack as they looked for a third goal and a series of shots and crosses didn't quite meet the player or target and Mosgiel hung on to take all three points.

For Wanaka, Levi Fletcher, Aaron Molloy and man of the match Al Carmichael had strong games.

This Saturday (19 September) Wanaka have their last home game of the season when they play the league winners Green Island at 2.45pm at the Wanaka Recreation Centre.
