A significant 5.6 magnitude earthquake near Milford Sound was felt in Wānaka last night (Friday March 22).

The earthquake struck at 11.36pm Friday night 35 kilometres north of Milford Sound at a depth of five kilometres.

GeoNet described it as 'moderate'.

There have been no reports of damage.
