A market taking place tomorrow (Saturday November 26) will give locals the chance to source Christmas gifts that don’t harm the environment.
The Wastebusters’ Sustainable Christmas Market will feature a wide range of gifts made by local creators and craftspeople and there will also be food and beverage stalls to keep shoppers fed.
“After seeing how successful last year's Sustainable Christmas Market was, we’re stoked to welcome even more stallholders this year,” Wastebusters shop supervisor Abi Hurford-Abel said.
“We really wanted to create a place where local artists could have a space to showcase their work while giving our community the opportunity to shop sustainability for the holidays.”
Abi said the market, which is running from 10am-2pm at the Wastebusters carpark, will feature “a huge range of creative arts and crafts to choose from”.
“Everything from natural beauty products to handmade clothing and upcycled skateboards to beeswax wraps.”
Wastebusters shop supervisor and events and communications coordinator Catrin Aeron told the Wānaka App even the most sustainably-minded people can be knocked off course by the holiday excess and expectations around gift-giving at Christmas.
“Take the pressure off by agreeing what a 'sustainable Christmas' looks like to you and your family,” Catrin recommends.
“Secret Santa is a great way to get something special for somebody without the excess, or focus on gifting experiences rather than ‘things’.”
She also recommends shopping second-hand first; supporting local, well-made products to reduce the carbon footprint of gifts if you choose to shop new; and using cloth, scrap fabric, paper shopping bags or old magazine pages as gift wrapping.
Find your sustainable Christmas goodies at the Wastebusters Christmas Market tomorrow (Saturday November 26), between 10am and 2pm. Visitors should bring cash for the cash-only sellers and park outside the Wastebusters gates.
