Five Mount Aspiring College (MAC) students have achieved impressive results at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Track, Field and Road Race Championships, which were held in Tauranga from December 11-13.

The MAC team included Georgie Bruce, Millie East, Abby Fisher, Estelle Gellatly, Scarlett Norman, and Niamh Townsend.

Abby (16) won the bronze medal in the senior girls 200m.

Abby, Millie (14), Georgie (16), and Niamh (15) won the silver medal in the senior girls 4x100m relay, and Estelle (14), Georgie, Millie and Abby won the silver medal in the senior girls 4x400m relay.

MAC teacher Lincoln Bruce said the girls had shown “total commitment” since May, training four or five days a week and competing every fortnight.

Aspiring Athletes coach Michael Beable has been there for every one of those sessions, Lincoln said.

“We were hoping that they would do well, and we were very happy with how they did - they achieved higher than they were hoping for,” he said.

The girls have all done very well over the past two nationals as juniors, he said, and while some were competing in their individual events as juniors (Niamh, Estelle, and Millie), they competed as seniors in the relay - up against 18-year-olds.

Millie and Estelle will be competing in the South Island Colgate Games in mid January, a large event held annually for seven to 14-year-olds.

“And the rest of them will be looking forward to the Otago and South Island secondary school events from mid-February,” Lincoln said.
