Plans for Wānaka’s 2023 Matariki event are well underway, with a notable change from previous years.
Te Kāhui o Matariki is a cluster of stars that rises in mid-winter, marking the start of the Māori New Year.
Wānaka’s Matariki celebrations have been organised by Kahu Youth for the past 12 years, and this Friday’s event (July 14) will be marked without fireworks.
“This decision was made based upon the kaupapa (principles) of Matariki prepared by the Matariki Advisory Committee as well as community feedback.” Kahu Youth said in a statement.
Attendees were kept warm last year while waiting for the fireworks.
“Matariki is a reflective time.
“The Pōhutukawa star, the eldest child of the Matariki, encourages us to reflect on our past and remember and acknowledge loved ones who have passed by looking to the stars.
“We know that the Wānaka Matariki fireworks have been a highlight for many people for many years and we are grateful for the people who went above and beyond to make these fireworks spectaculars possible. We hope that as a community we can find an alternative time for fireworks to be celebrated and enjoyed.”
The annual event has become a popular one for our community, and Kahu Youth says it provides an opportunity “for whānau and communities to come together to reflect on the year that has been and refresh and rise for the year ahead”.
“With our community we celebrate Matariki with whakangahau (performances), hangi and fun, free activities for youth to learn about and engage in Māori culture.”
The event is made possible by volunteers, and this year they are needed to set up the event (from 8am to 12noon; putting up marquees, placing of barriers, supporting lighting and sound techs set up equipment) and pack it down (from 6pm – 8pm; pulling down marquees, packing down equipment and barriers).
If you would like to support by volunteering please email [email protected] with your preferred role.
The Matariki celebrations will take place at the Dinosaur Park and Roys Bay Reserve on Friday July 14 from 2pm onwards.
