In a remarkable show of stamina and skill, four local golfers played 72-holes (four rounds) in one day to raise over $4,300 for St John recently.
The four women, Nora Hastings, Nikki Shaw, Wendy Borrius Broek, and Suzie Baillie, teed off at 6:45am on Sunday morning (February 28) with glow-in-the-dark golf balls, and 10 hours and 15 minutes later finished the last of 72 holes.
The conditions were perfect, they said, and they thanked their caddies for keeping up their spirits, and enabling fast play, as well as the many supporters who joined them in the last round to give them “a great boost when we needed it most”.
They also thanked the Wanaka Golf Club’s pro shop team who assisted with tee bookings and advised other players of the challenge, “allowing us to pass a number of groups on the course with ease, including those playing in a match; thank you all for letting us play through”.
Prior to this big day the four women had played 54 consecutive holes just for fun but were overwhelmed by the support they received from club members, friends and family when they proposed the 72-hole challenge as a fundraising effort.
They said they were touched by the support as well as the amazing contribution everyone made to the Wanaka St John.
