A 58-year-old man has died at an event at Glendhu Bay this morning.

The man is believed to be from Wānaka and was participating in the Motatapu off road cycling event.

Police were notified about 9.30am, and part of Motatapu Road was closed for a short period of time.

It is understood the death was due to a medical event.

The Motatapu mountain bike event sees participants ride 47 kilometres from Glendhu Bay to Arrowtown.

The death has been referred to the Coroner.
