Lonely Planet celebrates ‘captivating’ Wānaka in travel top 10Lonely Planet shared this photo of Roy’s Peak as part of its celebration of the Southern Lakes and Central Otago regions as top holiday locations for 2024.

The Southern Lakes and Central Otago regions have been listed by Lonely Planet among its global Top 10 Best Value holiday locations for 2024.

The global travel authority said the Southern Lakes and Central Otago regions of New  Zealand beckon travellers to embrace a leisurely pace, reduce their environmental impact, and savour the delights of new cycling routes, rich local culture, and exquisite cuisine and wines.

It singles out the “captivating” towns of Wānaka, Queenstown, Cromwell, and Clyde.

Lonely Planet trade sales and marketing senior director Chris Zeiher highlighted the sustainable and accessible aspects of the regions.

"While many recognise this region for its world-class golf courses, winter sports, and renowned wineries,” he said, “a commitment to environmental stewardship and the appreciation of natural wonders through cycling and hiking offer a more sustainable and accessible way for visitors to engage with this extraordinary landscape.”

Southern Lakes and Central Otago’s “natural wonders” and environmental stewardship were highlighted.

Other destinations to make the Top 10 Best Value list included the USA’s Midwest, Poland, Romania’s Danube Limes, France’s Normandy, Egypt, Greece’s Ikaria, Algeria, and Europe’s Night Trains.

They are part of a wider group of 50 Best In Travel destinations selected for 2024, which also include categories for best countries, regions, cities and sustainable destinations.

“Our picks for this year seek to both inspire and follow the instincts of 2024’s traveller,” Chris said.

“Best in Travel is Lonely Planet’s heart and soul travel inspiration offering, responding to the urgent enthusiasm of travellers who want to explore the world in a way that is authentic, led by local guidance and has sustainable values at its core.”

The Top 50 list was created first by collecting nominations, before those were whittled down and a panel of travel experts visited 50 destinations.

Each inclusion is chosen for its topicality, unique experiences, ‘wow’ factor and its ongoing commitment to sustainability, community, and  diversity, Chris said.
