Four Mount Aspiring College (MAC) students will represent Central Otago at the Kids Lit Quiz national competition in Wellington in June, after winning the regional title.
Three teams of MAC Year 7 students attended the Central Otago heat of the Kids Lit Quiz in Queenstown on Wednesday (April 7), with Sophia Pullar, Zack Adams-Biggs, Hannah Radford and Dani Maguire winning the competition.
They were each given $250 towards their transport to Wellington to enable them to compete in the finals in June.
"It was great to see the passion and excitement the Lit Quiz creates,” MAC principal Nicola Jacobsen said.
“The students who participated all had a great day, which was made greater with the win.”
The literature competition also accepted Year 6 students, and Hāwea Flat School sent three teams, Hāwea teacher Jennie Lyall said.
Hāwea Flat students Fergus Macrae, Jamie Huttemann, Bella Wright and Grace Derby achieved a perfect round.
One of the teams (Fergus Macrae, Jamie Huttemann, Bella Wright, and Grace Derby) was the top scoring Year 6 team and the only team to score a perfect round in one of the categories.
The international Kids Lit Quiz, for students aged from 10 to 13-years, was founded by New Zealand quizmaster Wayne Mills to encourage engagement in and excitement about reading.
During the literature quiz, teams of four students are asked to answer 100 questions on children’s literature, divided into ten categories.
