Four local businesses will discuss their moves towards zero waste at an event hosted by Lake Wānaka Tourism and Wastebusters taking place later this month.
‘Measure what matters: actions for carbon zero’ is a free event on Wednesday September 20.
Edgewater, Glendhu Bay Motor Camp, Federal Diner and Real NZ will share the organisational steps they have taken to reduce waste.
Following this will be a workshop session where attendees will come away with action points to apply to their own businesses.
“Landfill is Aotearoa’s single greatest contributor to greenhouse gas (including carbon) emissions after international and domestic travel,” Wastebusters’ representative Sophie Ward said.
“By taking steps to reduce or eliminate waste, businesses stand to make huge gains on all fronts: reducing their carbon footprint, improving financial and operational efficiencies, making favourable gains with employees and customers and being leaders in their field.”
LWT destination development lead Molly Hope said the recently released Destination Management Plan outlines a roadmap to regenerative tourism, with a keystone project to decarbonise the visitor economy.
“Achieving carbon zero by 2030 is an ambitious goal but together we can do it,” she said.
“If we know one thing about our district, it’s that anything can be achieved when the community gets behind an idea and we would encourage all business owners and their staff to join us in this conversation and start taking the collective action that we need to reach this goal.”
‘Measure what matters: actions for carbon zero’ will take place on Wednesday September 20 at the Wānaka Community Hub from 10am-12pm.
