Last chance for ‘Take A Kid Fishing Day’ The annual day out helps children learn about fishing.

The annual ‘Take A Kid Fishing Day’ is coming up soon, on Saturday October 31, and this weekend is the last chance to sign up.

The event is organised every year by the Upper Clutha Angling Club together with Fish and Game Otago.

“This year we have use of a large dam near Cromwell that has recently been stocked with several hundred hungry trout,” organisers said in a statement.

The fun day out includes supervised fishing, games, a BBQ lunch, competitions and play.

“We have some great giveaways and prizes for the casting competitions,” organisers said.

On the day the group will be targeting trout and perch, with very experienced fishermen providing guidance.

Children must be aged between seven and 12-years-old to take part.

Parents are welcome to come along and help out, organisers said. There is no cost involved, and participants simply need to bring sunglasses, sun hats, sun protection and a brightly coloured top (to assist in monitoring the children). Help with transport would be appreciated.

The annual ‘Take A Kid Fishing Day’ event has become something of an institution: no one quite knows how long it has been running for.

Enrolment and authorisation forms for the 2020 event are available from the school or by request from the secretary of the Upper Clutha Angling Club by emailing [email protected]

Completed authorisation forms must be scanned to the club secretary at the above email address prior to Monday (October 26).

Please note a limit of 30 children has been set and enrolments are on a first-come first served basis until the limit is reached.

The Upper Clutha Angling Club was created in Wanaka more than 50 years ago. Throughout the year the club offers activities like a beginners’ fly fishing course and organised fishing trips away. It also makes submissions to statutory bodies, does surveys and relocation of fish, and maintains access ways.
