Wanaka photographer Cory Marshall is opening his first full-time gallery space with a celebration next weekend (Saturday October 24).

The new gallery, located in Queenstown, will feature a selection of Cory’s landscape photography taken all over New Zealand.

Cory’s work has taken him around the world, photographing natural landscapes from Iceland to Cuba and Thailand to Australia. He and his wife Kelly discovered Wanaka on their travels, and have now called it home for three and a half years.

“We originally were planning on staying in New Zealand for only one year, but we fell in love with Wanaka and the Southern Alps and that one year turned into us staying permanently,” Cory, who is originally from California, told the Wanaka App.

Unsurprisingly, he loves taking photos of Wanaka and its surroundings.

“My favourite view to photograph around Wanaka is from Cascade Saddle in Mount Aspiring National Park. The hike is very steep but once you get to the top you have fantastic views of the Matukituki Valley and Tititea/Mount Aspiring,” he said.

“I also have some great photos of the Wanaka tree that always prove popular with locals and tourists alike, even though it may be the world’s most photographed tree.”

Cory has been a full-time landscape photographer for the past ten years; he has held exhibitions at Cardrona Distillery and Rippon Vineyard, and had several pop-up galleries in Wanaka over the past few years.

After Cory was given a camera as a university graduation present, photography quickly turned into a hobby, and then a career, and the keen hiker and lover of the outdoors has always focused on landscape photography.

“Once I started getting more serious about photography, my hiking trips changed quite a lot. Instead of doing day trips, I will normally bring about a weeks' worth of food and hike up into the mountains. When I find the composition that I want to photograph, I will wait for the perfect sunset or sunrise to show that scene in the best possible way.”

The new gallery will also feature work by Jordan McInally, who specialises in astrophotography and mountain landscapes.

The Cory Marshall Gallery opening will take place next Saturday (October 24) from 5-9pm, at 1-7 Earl Street, Queenstown. The event is sponsored by Rhyme and Reason Brewery and Cardrona Distillery. Learn more about the gallery here.
