The Upper Clutha premier rugby team’s (the Rams) head coach Alex Dickson is pleading with his side’s fans attending tomorrow’s (Saturday July 20) grand final of the Central Otago Premier Rugby Competition to “make some noise”.

The Rams will play defending champions Alexandra in Wānaka in tomorrow’s game and Alex told the Wānaka App it’d be “awesome” if the home fans would get in behind his team.

“I just want some more noise, just want a bit more vocal, you know, just want a bit of bloody noise, that’s all,” he said

“If it's not going our way it just goes dead quiet doesn’t it?”

Alex’s comments came after a stoic crowd watched the Rams demolish Maniototo 58-8 in its semi-final clash last Saturday (July 13) in Wānaka.

The ease of that win may have kept the crowd quiet but Alex is mindful of last year’s grand final loss to Alexandra and is hoping the home crowd can lift his team to claim the title this year.

Alexandra captain Tyler Ford told the Central App that he expected the Rams “to throw everything at [this year’s final]” as some of the Rams players would have “a chip on their shoulders after last year and falling at the final hurdle”.

Tyler said supporters travelling to games were a boost for the team.

“Last week we had more supporters there than [home team] Wakatipu ... three supporters' vans full from the club and other supporters too.”

A crowd of more than 3,000 is expected to attend tomorrow’s match and if Alex has his way, they will be in fine voice.

The Rams have played Alexandra twice this season securing 43-12 and 28-24 victories, a pattern that is repeated from last year when the Rams beat Alexandra twice before losing to them in the grand final 32-24.

The grand final will kick off at 2.30pm tomorrow (Saturday July 20) at the Upper Clutha Rugby Club in Wānaka.
