In typical Wanaka winter fashion, the day after a southerly storm blew through it turned into a sunny afternoon which beckoned intrepid adventurers Ted and Derek out for a jaunt through Wanaka Station Park and down to the lake.

A quad of rowers made the most of the sunny and light conditions while others walked, biked and ran the Millenium Trail from Pembroke Park towards Glendhu Bay.

After a 25 minute stroll, Edgewater Resort appeared on the horizon and its lush lawns beckoned with teasing glimpses of a sunny courtyard and smells of home cooking.

Wanaka Station Park’s tree-lined entrance is always nice for a walk.

Time for a cup of tea and a scone.  

It’s hard to decide on just one each when there are five mouthwatering sweet and savoury options, but the duo eventually settled on two scones: Lemon and poppyseed with sweet lemon curd mascarpone and ham, onion and gruyere.

A pot of Earl Grey with a slice of lemon and a buttery Gisborne chardonnay to go with the cheesy scone were soon brought to the table in the sun beside the sofas.

And the scones were delicious; crunchy on the outside and soft, moist and tasty on the inside.

Sofas in Edgewater’s courtyard made the lazy afternoon very comfortable.

Edgewater staff member Carl, who served the tea and scones, said the resort was 60 per cent occupied during the week while Queen’s Birthday weekend had seen almost 100 per cent occupancy. As always, non-staying guests were also welcome to dine at Edgewater for brunch, lunch and dinner, he said.

And if it’s too cold to sit outside, there’s a cosy fire inside.

Carl was very pleased to still have his job which, in these strange times, is good news indeed.

A lazy half hour spent lounging in the sun, then home again, home again, jiggity-jig.
