Hundreds of Queenstown Lakes businesses have already benefited from two business support funds created after the arrival of Covid-19.
The funds, which are being distributed through the Otago Regional Business Partners network, offer businesses support for planning in response to Covid-19 and implementation of those plans.
The funds were announced in May 2021 by tourism minister Stuart Nash as part of targeted funding to support five regions hardest hit by the tourism downturn: Fiordland, South Westland, Queenstown Lakes, Mackenzie District and Kaikōura.
The first fund, the Business Advisory Support Fund, offers up to $5,000 per business for expert advice on planning and decision-making.
More than 200 businesses used the fund during September and October 2021.
Figures for November and December are not yet available.
The second fund, which provides businesses with another grant of up to $5,000 to help implement the plans and advice, was used by 50 businesses during September and October.
QLDC economic development manager Peter Harris said he was pleased to see businesses make use of the support.
“We know that this support is tiny compared to the lack of revenue businesses are suffering from, but if it helps them get good advice and act on it then it offers one small way they can move forward,” he said.
A third fund - a kick-start fund so eligible tourism businesses can receive funding to help scale up to respond to the return of international visitors – has been put on hold by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment until there is clarity about when the borders will open for visitors.
Businesses that have not yet signed up can find more information, including eligibility criteria here.
