The sowing of new seed is a major step in the redevelopment of the Hāwea Bowling Club’s playing green, club president Lawrence Hardy says.
The long-running club’s green is located at the Lake Hāwea Community Centre at Peter Fraser Park.
“All of our members are excited by the progress made over the winter in removing the old green and ensuring that the new green will be perfectly level,” Lawrence said.
Spring weather was required for the new seed to be sown by a specialist company from Christchurch.
This was overseen by the club’s greenkeepers Ethan Flynn and Donald Urquhart.
It is hoped that the new green will be available to use early next year, Lawrence said.
When it’s ready, the club will be able to get back to its regular get-togethers and hosting of tournaments and meets.
In the meantime, the club is grateful to be able to use the facilities at the Wānaka Bowling club, Lawrence said.
Despite having to play away from home at the moment, the Hāwea club has welcomed new members this season.
“Laying a new green is a huge undertaking for a small club, but we are confident that the end result will be well worth all of the effort”.
