Heavy rain warning for lake headwaters extended.

The MetService has extended the heavy rain warning (orange) for the headwaters of our lakes until 6pm Thursday (April 11). This warning may be extended closer to the time.

A front is forecast to become slow-moving over the South Island on Wednesday, bringing strong northerly winds and rain to many parts of central and southern New Zealand.

Expect 200 to 300 mm of rain about the main divide, and 100 to 200 mm within 15 km further east. Peak rates of 15 to 25 mm/h are expected from Thursday morning.

Heavy rain is forecast for Wānaka on Thursday night with further rain expected on Friday.

Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are possible and driving conditions may be hazardous.
