Heavy rain may disrupt campers, trampers

The MetService has a heavy rain watch and thunderstorm watch in place for the region and police are asking campers to remain vigilant.

Rain is expected from this afternoon (Friday January 1) through to late Saturday, with heavy falls expected, and police say that campers and trampers should consider that rivers and streams may rise over the coming days.

“We want people to be prepared before they head out camping so they don't end up becoming trapped by rising waters,” the police said in a statement.

Anyone tramping should let someone know where they are going, and how long for, and take appropriate gear, clothing and food, the police said.

The MetService says rainfall may approach warning criteria in some areas and thunderstorms are possible producing localised downpours and flooding.

If it is an emergency call 111 or if something has already happened call 105 or report it online here.
