Good news for those wishing to travel the Haast Pass road this weekend with Waka Kotahi announcing that the road will be open from tonight (Friday September 29) to 8am Monday (October 2) morning.
The road has been closed due to slips caused by heavy rain with three escorted convoys through work sites per day this week.
“Crews have pulled out all the stops to get this piece of highway ready for safe use over the weekend with traffic signals keeping the Muddy Creek area single lane,” Waka Kotahi system manager Otago and Southland Robert Choveaux said.
“The road will be open 24/7 this weekend, barring any more slips or severe weather events."
Over the weekend traffic lights will manage a single lane across Muddy Creek and its approaches so travellers should expect delays.
“From Monday, the highway will close again with convoys resuming at 8am, potentially with an extra fourth convoy which we will confirm on Monday," Robert said.
“People still need to bear in mind that this route is subject to short-term closures if more rain falls or slips occur so check before you head off.”
Heavy rain is forecast for the West Coast on Sunday.
Convoys and restricted access will resume at 8am, midday and 4.30pm Monday, October 2 when work crews will continue clearance work around the site.
