“Grossly intoxicated” boaties interceptedHarbourmaster Phil Wiel

QLDC harbourmaster Phil Wiel told the Wānaka App that Wānaka waterways had been busy over the holidays but people were generally behaving themselves and wearing life jackets.

However a 19ft boat with five “grossly intoxicated” men was intercepted last night (Sunday December 31). The men had motored from Glendhu Bay to watch the council fireworks display. Phil said the lake was choppy at the time.

“It’s crazy stuff,” he said. “People put themselves in incredible danger.”

“Research the rules, know the rules,” he said. The boaties safety code is: Wear your lifejacket, take two waterproof ways to call for help, check the marine weather forecast, avoid alcohol, and be a responsible skipper. Find more information here.

Phil also reminded people to keep their speed down to five knots within 200m from the shore.
