A base jumper has been helicoptered to safety after falling west of Treble Cone this morning (Monday February 15).
Wanaka Search and Rescue incident management team coordinator Bill Day told the Wanaka App the local woman, believed to be in her 50s, jumped from a cliff about ten minutes drive west of Treble Cone skifield at about 6.45am, but something went wrong.
“She slipped and bounced down a bit, and ended up on a ledge,” he said.
"She was a bit banged up."
Her companion, who was not jumping, saw she was injured and called the police, who alerted Wanaka SAR and Aspiring Helicopters.
“We got the call and six volunteers turned out - three managing and three on the job,” Bill said.
They included members of Wanaka SAR’s alpine rescue team - “some of New Zealand’s finest climbers and guides”.
After securing a 30m strop on the helicopter, one volunteer flew in alongside the injured woman - testament to the skills of both the helicopter pilot and the volunteer, Bill said.
“Three minutes later they were on the ground,” he said. “It was a good save.”
A ground ambulance attended and assessed the woman.
“Her injuries were quite minor, so she was really fortunate,” Bill said.
The unpaid volunteers of Wanaka LandSAR, operating in conjunction with the NZ police and the Rescue Coordination Centre, carry out between 35 and 50 operations a year, making Wanaka consistently one of the busiest SAR groups in the country.
