Wānaka freeskier Nico Porteous has won gold for New Zealand in the halfpipe at the Beijing Winter Olympics.

Nico scored a best run of 93.00 out of a possible 100 points in the three run final today (Saturday February 19).

"Conditions were tough today," Nico said.

"So I stuck to what I know, just really tried my best and left everything out there."

Nico’s brother Miguel finished in eleventh position of the twelve finalists.

The silver medal went to double Olympic champion David Wise (USA), and the bronze medal to Alex Ferreira (USA).

Nico’s gold medal is New Zealand’s second of the Games after Zoi Sadowski-Synnott won gold in the snowboard slopestyle last week.

"Watching Zoi win last week was really really motivating because I wanted to be there, and I wanted to do that," Nico said.

"It was really inspirational and driving for me and made me put my head down and so everything I could for this moment."

Nico is the reigning world champion in freeski halfpipe and won bronze in the same event at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in 2018.
