Teddy bears are popping up in windows all around New Zealand and elsewhere in the world, and Wanaka is no exception.
The cuddly toys now adorning windows all over town are part of a global trend intended to give young children some excitement when they head out for fresh air during the COVID-19 lockdown, which is now estimated to apply to one third of the world’s residents.
The initiative was inspired by the book We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen.
The lines ‘We're going on a bear hunt. We're going to catch a big one. What a beautiful day! We're not scared!’ have been chanted by many children and parents since the ever-popular book’s release in 1989.
In Wanaka, teddy bears have been spotted hanging out on fences, looking out from upstairs windows and scoffing homegrown apples.
A dedicated Facebook page and website have been set up by group ‘NZ Bear Hunt’ for kids and families around New Zealand.
“Put a teddy bear in your window facing the road and as people are out getting fresh air and exercise, they can enjoy the bears around their neighbourhood,” NZ Bear Hunt organisers said.
“Pin your address so we know where you are and like our Facebook page NZ Bear Hunt to stay up to date.”
Other bits and bobs bringing ‘warm fuzzies’ to the Wanaka neighbourhood are crocheted love hearts which have appeared in trees around Hawea Flat and rocks painted with messages of support found on the lakefront tracks.
