The New Zealand Olympic Committee’s Great Olympic Skate Roadshow and its super-sized, record-breaking 12m long skateboard will be in Wanaka on Tuesday (June 8).
The super-sized skateboard, dubbed Eke Tahi (Ride as One), represents the Olympic Games offering more extreme, urban and youth-focused events.
Eke Tahi is travelling the country to drum up support for the New Zealand team of athletes heading to Tokyo next month, and the New Zealand Olympic Committee wants the Wanaka community to “get on board”.
The skateboard, which is 12 metres long and weighs 800kg, is set to break the record for the largest fully operational skateboard in the world.
Eke Tahi celebrates six new sports that have been added to the Olympic Games, including skateboarding. The others are surfing, three-on-three basketball, sport climbing, karate and baseball/softball.
It will be at the Wanaka skate park in Pembroke Park on Tuesday afternoon (June 8) from 1-4pm.
The Great Olympic Skate Roadshow is travelling to around 45 towns across the country over 41 days, and the Olympic Committee is asking New Zealanders to show their support for the New Zealand team by tagging @thenzteam and use the hashtag #GetOnBoardNZ on social media.
When the Roadshow has finished the skateboard will be at the new "New Zealand Team HQ" Fan Zone at The Cloud in Auckland as the Tokyo Olympic Games kick off on July 23.
More than 200 athletes are expected to represent New Zealand at the Games.
