Wānaka Tennis Club was thrilled to receive a $15,000 grant from Otago Community Trust (OCT), club president Jeanette Hatten says.
“This grant will help us pay for resurfacing courts one and two,” she told the Wānaka App.
“We are very appreciative of this grant.”
The long-running local club has seven courts in total and it is going “from strength to strength”, Jeanette said.
Membership numbers are increasing in all age brackets and social tennis days continue to have high numbers into winter.
The club’s courts are available to both members and non-members, Jeanette said.
“With our court booking system (bookacourt) it is easy for members and non-members to book a court online at any time,” she said.
“Our two lit courts that are available to anyone are used a lot at this time of the year, even in the cold.”
Jeanette said the club has many different membership types to suit any kind of player - there are options by week, month, or holiday, as well as full membership.
“We have wonderful coaching staff and a very enthusiastic committee who are working to continue to improve the tennis club,” she said.
The club’s players are doing well both on and off the local courts.
At the recent King’s Birthday Weekend tournaments in Dunedin, the Southern Lakes team (with senior players from Wānaka and Queenstown Tennis clubs) achieved fourth place; while younger players travelled to Timaru and combined with Southland players to enter 12-and-under and 10-and-under teams, which achieved first and third place respectively.
“It is great to see such a big group of Wānaka members playing these competitions and doing so well,” Jeanette said.
